Working with Cashtivity (from Marissa Di Pasquale CEO)
“In summary, Cashtivity’s Apps are designed to help kids and students in primary/ secondary schools with financial literacy and money management. The Apps enables the user to enter their own data and record decisions and plans relevant to them. For example, they can record their spending, construct a dream goal and plan and track simple business activities (like Bake Sales etc).
There are two projects we have in mind:
1. Campus videos – we are putting together the scripts/ briefs for the first series of Cashtivity Campus tutorials. The Cashtivity Campus is the online financial education App forming part of the Cashtivity ‘family’ of financial literacy Apps. We would like the first series of tutorials to be produced as high quality videos (TED like quality) as a showcase for when our Apps are released to primary/high schools from April this year (final release date to schools yet to be settled).
Mat Farmakis is collaborating with us to project manage the Campus initiative and it would be great if he had a group of students to work with under your guidance to produce the first series. The creation of the videos in terms of format and quality/production would be in the hands of the students. We have some ideas on format – however, it may be that the students could have a go at testing out several different format types (slide show; interactive voice over; news room chatty style etc) before we settle on a preferred format for the first series. We would brief the students on the number of tutorials forming part of “series 1″ when we meet to brief them. While we want a format that engages kids, we need a format that transcends age groups as we have other groups (teachers, parents) and potentially others who would use the Campus tutorials if they are well produced. The inspirations we draw from include the Khan Academy (a free online education website),TED (the US conference group), the high quality courses that appear on iTunesU (like Stanford University’s courses) and ABC3 productions.
2. Web design – we have engaged various student teams and interns to help us scope out and code up the functionality of the Apps. Their work has been excellent however we are left with a major design challenge.
Our second project is to revamp the whole website design to better engage with Cashtivity’s primary users (kids/students) but appealing to other users (teachers/parents – who will have supervision access to the site). We are also anticipating that the ICT Faculty will be providing a student team to develop a prototype iPAD (iOS) version of Cashtivity this semester so our design requirements would cross both web and mobile platforms. The websites we compare ourselves to are: Facebook.com/ Kiva.org/ Mint.com
If you are interested (and able) to assist with these projects, please send an email to

LIFE FOR BEGINNERS
Life for Beginners is a new, independent, media business, which produces and distributes multi-media for pre-schoolers to help teach them about the Australian environment.
Run by two mothers (Martine Corompt and Sonia Orchard) with extensive experience in new media and writing/publishing, Life for Beginners released its dvd-activity card boxset In the Garden last October to rave reviews (see website). They sold their first print run of 1000 copies through Melbourne retailers in the eight weeks before Christmas, and In the Garden was rated by Readings bookstores as their Number One Childrens Nonfiction Title for 2010.
In the Garden and Life for Beginners have appeared in The Herald Sun, The Melbourne Magazine, The Age, Gardening Australia, New Idea and more; and on ABC Radio Melbourne and Hobart and 3RRR. In June In the Garden will be appearing in Burke’s Backyard and The Outdoor Room.
Life for Beginner’s second title By the Pond, will be released in September 2011.
While Life for Beginners has been successful in getting exposure in traditional (print and radio) media, their online presence has been very limited. Life for Beginners has a website (with shopping cart), a blog and a Facebook page, and their focus now is to attract customers to these sites, and increase online sales within Australia and New Zealand.
We are looking for someone to do work experience with our business, with the possibility of this leading to paid work in the future. Jobs would include: formulating an online marketing strategy, generating interest on the Facebook site and blog, and finding and contacting appropriate blogs to promote Life for Beginners. We are looking for someone with initiative to think up creative ways to generate brand-trust, interest and sales amongst all those online mums out there. Being a mother, or someone familiar with the online mummy networks, would be a bonus.
Life for Beginners website: http://www.beginnertime.com
Please apply to Sonia Orchard at Sonia@beginnertime.com and outline your skills, experience, availability and why and how you think you’d be able to improve Life for Beginner’s online presence.
