The beauty of data visualisation

David McCandless,a writer and graphic designer, turns complex data sets (like worldwide military spending, media buzz,Facebook status updates) into beautiful, simple diagrams that tease out unseen patterns and connections. Good design,he suggests,is the best way to navigate information glut —and it may just change the way we see the world.

The following is a great intro to setting up a wordpress site
http://codex.wordpress.org/First_Steps_With_WordPress

When you are edting Motif, however, you are must follow our rules with regards to the way the site has been set up. The following are those rules.

1. Include an image with each new post –after you have inserted the image into the post you will need to make sure that you set the advanced properties of the image by clicking on the image. Select Edit Image and then Advanced Settings.

Where it saysImage Properties add

Border 1  Vertical Space 5 Horizontal Space 5 The click update.

2. Before you publish your post, you need to select a category to determine where the post will appear on the screen.

The categories are

Featured      Student Work     Student News   Other News

These categories are set to work with this theme so it is not possible to add new categories or change the existing ones.

3. Each post should have a short excerpt added. This is like the breakout or intro that you often read with news stories online and goes in the box below the post.

4. If you are unclear about the content and what me or someone else to read it before you publish it to the site,Click on Save draft. The when you are satisfied with it you can click on Publish.

4. You can embed other media into stories. But be careful.

This is YOUR site! Have fun with it. And after your group’s week is over, don’t feel that you can’t still contribute stories. The more stories we get the better!

Uploading your iMovie Profile

Just a reminder that you need to upload your iMovie profile to the Convergent Journalism channel at

http://www.youtube.com/user/convergentjournalism

I will send you the username and password to login via email.

The following video will help you to review what we did in class yesterday. And remember that you can access the Postgrad Lab on Level 4 to get onto a Mac should you need to do so.

You might also be interested in how you set up a blog on your own server –that is,on a private host rather than through wordpress.com –don’t worry,I’m not going to ask you to do this! But it does help you understand how the back end of blogs work.
